On Earth Day, we put a spotlight on a farm that makes sustainability a priority in all it does – Mixed Forage Farms in Park Rapids, MN.
Owners Dan and Shelly Caroll aren’t your run-of-the-mill farmers. Sure, they manage the ins and outs of their farm, but their mission goes beyond growing crops and tending livestock. They're stewards of the land, committed to regenerative practices and environmental conservation. Dan oversees the rotational grazing schedule, focusing on soil health and productivity, while Shelly spearheads clean water and biodiversity efforts. Together, they're a powerful pair dedicated to sustainability and stewardship.
They're also one of 1,480+ farms proudly certified by the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP), a voluntary initiative that promotes conservation practices to protect our water. Dan said, “When we heard about the program, it just made sense. We were already managing our lands to be water friendly. We have a responsibility to act to benefit our own lands, our neighbors' lands, and lands within our watershed. It's all connected. We want clean drinking water and sustainable watersheds and aquifers. We encourage consumers to support MAWQC farms for the same reasons.”
So what's on offer at Mixed Forage Farms? Premium, locally-harvested firewood, rugged birdhouses crafted with care, and hand-harvested wild rice – all proudly Minnesota Grown. They also do habitat work for hire off the farm, helping landowners increase wildlife habitat and viewing opportunities on their property.
Supporting MAWQC farms means you're supporting responsible stewardship and conserving our water resources. It's a win-win-win for farmers, consumers, and the environment.
Let's make every day Earth Day and show some love for your local MAWQC farms and join the work for a greener, cleaner future.
