With National Beer Month and Earth Day both falling in April, we thought it was the perfect time to check in with Eric Sannerud of Mighty Axe Hops. Sannerud is one of seven Minnesota Grown members producing local hops. He’s also a Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP) certified farmer.
In 2016, Mighty Axe Hops became MAWQCP certified for its efforts to help improve the quality of Minnesota’s lakes, rivers, and streams. Certification ensures a farm regulatory certainty for ten years and gives certified farmers priority for technical and financial assistance. For Sannerud, environmentally conscious practices come naturally, and certification was the logical next step.
“It’s a badge to show our customers that we care about preserving water quality,” said Sannerud. “We want our operation to yield a great product, and we’re doing that without taking a toll on the environment.”To read the in-depth interview with Eric Sannerud, check out last month’s Pick of the Month Member Spotlight.
